Japan approves revised beef safeguard mechanism

Japan has approved an amendment to the beef safeguard mechanism in the U.S.-Japan Trade Agreement (USJTA), which completes the process to finalize the agreement, according to the U.S. Trade Representative. Once in effect, the updated agreement will amend the beef safeguard trigger level under the USJTA with a new, three-trigger safeguard mechanism that will allow U.S. exporters to meet Japan’s growing demand for high-quality beef and reduce the probability that Japan will impose higher tariffs in the future.
