Government funding talks stall as deadline nears

With just one week remaining until a partial government shutdown that would include USDA and FDA, Congress is still struggling to carve a path forward on funding. Sunday afternoon, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) announced they had reached an agreement on overall spending levels for fiscal year 2024, which began Oct. 1 and ends this Sept. 30. However, the agreement enraged the House’s right wing, which spent most of this week working for its defeat.
