With December export levels yet to be known, beef exports were down about 12-13% in 2023. While this sounds negative, U.S. Meat Export Federation Chief Executive Officer Dan Halstrom says 2023 is still probably going to be the second-largest year ever for U.S. beef exports, behind 2022.
The highlights for the year are really two-fold, according to Halstrom. First, the drag on exports has mostly been in Asia, specifically in foodservice. “By no means is foodservice back to normal post-covid, especially in Japan, in China and even a little bit in Korea.”
